For impact-driven leaders & brands: Custom design that builds trust, authority & premium pricing.
November 26, 2025
You can have the best product in your market and still compete on price. On the Small Business, Big Engine podcast, I talked with Grant about the connection most businesses miss: design builds trust, and trust sets your price.

There's a harsh truth most small business owners don't want to hear: you could have a very high quality offer, but if your brand looks amateur, you'll never receive the authority and credibility for it you could. I recently had the pleasure of joining Grant on his podcast to talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention - the direct connection between visual design, trust, and pricing power.
My philosophy cuts straight to the point: people buy from brands they trust, and trust starts the moment they land on your website or any other visual touchpoint. The problem is most small businesses treat design as optional decoration rather than part of their sales strategy. They'll spend months perfecting their product or service, then slap together a website using a generic template and wonder why they're constantly justifying their. Strong design isn't about being flashy or trendy, it's about communicating trust, credibility, and confidence from the first impression.
That first impression happens in milliseconds. Before someone reads a single word of your carefully crafted copy, their brain has already made a judgment about whether you're worth their time, and their money.
One of the most counterintuitive points we discussed: raising your prices often attracts more serious clients, not fewer. I've built an international client base across Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the US by positioning my studio as a premium creative partner. Through that journey, I've seen firsthand that when you look expensive, you can be expensive. And when you can be expensive, you attract clients who value quality over discount deals.
Budget clients expect premium service at bargain prices. Premium clients expect fair value and respect your expertise. Guess which relationship is healthier for your business?
Design without strategy is just decoration. Strategy without design is boring - it may work on paper, but it's missing emotion. Magic happens when design follows function.

One of the key points I shared was the importance of repelling the wrong clients. Too many businesses try to appeal to everyone, which means they end up attracting no one—or worse, attracting nightmare clients who drain resources and kill momentum. Your brand should act as a filter. The right people should feel immediately drawn to you. The wrong people should feel like you're not for them. That's not a failure of marketing, that's smart business.
Of course, we had to address the elephant in the room: AI design tools. Can't anyone just prompt their way to a professional brand now? My take is nuanced. AI is a powerful tool that's changing the design landscape, but it's not replacing human creativity and strategic thinking. Generic AI output still looks generic. What separates amateur from professional isn't access to tools, it's knowing why certain choices work and how to apply them strategically. You can read more about AI & Design here.
We covered a lot more in the episode: how to tell when your visuals are holding you back, when a full rebrand makes sense and when smaller updates will do, and how I handle it when a client's existing design needs to be challenged. And a bit of my own story, from Berlin to Cape Town, and building a business that gives me the freedom I was looking for.
